MAGUS 2022: Wildcraft

Picture

What is Wildcraft?

Wildcrafted Druidry is a concept popularized by Gordon Cooper, former Grand Archdruid of the Ancident Order of Druids in America (AODA).   "Wildcrafted Druidries" are developed from practices that are "
localized to our place, rooted in our ecosystems, and designed in conjunction with the world and landscapes immediately around us."

As North American Druids, we congregate from unique and varying circumstances that enrich our Druidry in different and wonderful ways.   From biosphere, to heritage, to cultural background, each member of our community brings with them a rich patchwork of personal experience.

The goal of MAGUS 2022 is to honor this wide set of experience and to inspire attendees to build a toolkit that strengthens our connection to the land, empowers the individual, and expands the collective breadth of knowledge within our community as a whole.

Listening to the Land: Incorporating
Phenology into Personal Practice

Phenology is a fancy way of describing what Druids do: observe the rhythms of the land around us to better understand our role in the cycles that drive the forces of life in our bioregions.  The Wheel of the Year gives us the perfect entry point for exploring phenology, but how can we go more deeply into relation with our non-human neighbors?  This workshop will explore how we can build webs of knowledge about our own ecologies, as well as helping you to construct your own simple monthly tracker to get started.

Dr. Patricia Robin Woodruff

 Wildcrafting Your Heritage

Just as we wander the woods looking for edibles and medicinals there is so much magic to be found exploring off the beaten path of written history. Woodruff has harvested knowledge from fairy tales, song lyrics, holiday traditions, common superstitions, and yes, even from the names and uses of plants. Woodruff will present information found while tracing her ancestors’ cultures through the Carpathian Mountains to where it merged with Celtic cultures, delving ever deeper into our common Neolithic path. Her research work is rewriting what we know of history so be prepared for some mind-blowing information packed into this hour-and-a-half long talk.

Wildcrafting Druidry: Tree and Plant Wisdom

In this workshop, participants will learn how to create magical and divination meanings from trees through understanding local tree lore: ecology, stories and myths, traditional uses, and herbal uses. In the first part of the workshop we’ll go on a plant walk and visit with key tree and plant species, discussing lore to build potential magical knowledge and connection. In the second part of the workshop, participants will craft a magical tool from a sustainable, local harvest and consider wildcrafted uses. The workshop will include discussion of how to ethically and sustainably wildcraft tools, medicine, and food; gratitude practices for building and interacting with plants; and building lasting relationships with plants and trees.
